I've always held a grudge against them because they were so unspecific in their crediting of John Stanley.

Aside from that, as said in this post, I'm not a non-John Stanley Little Lulu fan, so the other movie/TV versions aren't of interest to me. I know there are a lot of Lulu fans, regardless of the creator(s) behind it, so I'll leave that task to another researcher...

Thanks for your comments--they are much appreciated.Frank M. The only thing that stopped Little Lulu's film career was Famous' development of its own cute little girl character, Little Audrey, whose films first appeared as soon as Lulu's disappeared.

No one has yet mentioned that Paramount attempted to revive Little Lulu in 1962 with a pair of cartoons, at a time when the studio seemed to be exclusively devoting itself to adaptations of King Features and other comic characters. Marge actually has the copyright on one of those cartoons, "Alvin's Solo Flight". That and the subsequent "Frog's Legs" were directed by Seymour Kneitel, who directed some of the earlier ones. The difference in qualit is like night and day.Dave Mackeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13454782108761662940noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7157513690234917810.post-19176417718402007102012-04-04T17:16:41.465-07:002012-04-04T17:16:41.465-07:00I agree with Frank's entire analysis. The Lulu...I agree with Frank's entire analysis. The Lulu in Famous' cartoons isn't really used to her fullest potential as a character, a bit of writing nuance that seperates merely GOOD cartoons from EXCELLENT ones. However, the best of the Lulu series is still some of the best of Famous' output, and can hold their own against the best of the non-WB/MGM "B" studios (Lantz, Terry, Screen Gems and so forth)

Lulu's design in the shorts is also the best it'll ever be, not even Stanley excepted IMHO.

Oh, and I appreciate the shoutout. Now that Olive Films is licensing from the Republic Pictures library, my fondest hope is that they'll one-up what I did and put out a good HD-restored set of these cartoons.Kevin W. I forgot to answer your questions in your earlier note... as you can see, the fat dad did exist pre-Stanley, and is in the Marge cartoons...

Alvin, whether named or not, does appear in some Marge gag cartoons.

I can't answer with certainty where or when Tubby got his name. He's certainly present in Marge's cartoons. I think he's called "Tubby" by Lulu in the "Musica-Lulu" cartoon.

I'll have to listen to that "Scout With The Gout" song again, at the risk of a sleepless night, while it repeats in my head like a defective jukebox...Frank M. Those cartoons were a staple of my TV watching years as a kid in the 1950s -- at the very time my fascination with the Dell comic books was peaking. And while those cartoons aren't nearly as amusing or interesting as what Stanley was doing, they're nevertheless wonderful in their way and certainly a major component to the Lulu mythos.Elliothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03422195222099034006noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7157513690234917810.post-11201484862198820692012-02-28T11:00:17.519-08:002012-02-28T11:00:17.519-08:00I want to see Frank assess the HBO Little Lulu. I don't know...I'm looking forward to this.

I don't know much about the original Marge Lulu, so I'm curious about a few points of possible relationship between Famous and Stanley:

-> When was Tubby first named Tubby, and by whom—Marge, Famous, or Stanley? (Tubby is called "Fatso" in a 1945 cartoon, but he's Tubby by 1946; given lead time, would a 1946 short have been in production early enough to coincide with Stanley's work on OS 74? Stanley surely had access to Famous production materials at the time, as he was working on ANIMAL COMICS stories with Famous characters...)

-> Did Lulu's dad exist in Marge, pre-Famous, as the portly Stanley design, or could Stanley conceivably have adapted his design from the Famous character model (who often wasn't Lulu's father at all)?

-> THE DOG SHOW-OFF (1948) includes an Alvin-like character. Did Alvin exist in Marge pre-Stanley, or was Famous adapting Stanley?

-> Can *you* understand the final song lyrics in A SCOUT WITH THE GOUT? (Okay, that's not very relevant.)ramapithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01751343744514656549noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7157513690234917810.post-9442369227581198922012-02-26T12:57:13.180-08:002012-02-26T12:57:13.180-08:00The Famous Little Lulu cartoons made in Miami are:...The Famous Little Lulu cartoons made in Miami are:

Eggs Don't Bounce
Hullaba-Lulu
Lucky Lulu

"Lulu in Hollywood" was also maybe made in Miami.
